India's Internet, Mobile & Social Media State of 2011

As per the recent Internet & Mobile trends, India is one of the top countries witnessing the highest growth both in terms of the number of active users as well as the usage.  The Internet, Mobile & Social Media landscape is growing quickly which is direct correlation of the adaptability & affordability of the respective mediums that coincide at a certain point.


More than 100 million is the total population of Internet users in India, which is still a mere 8% of India’s total population. Around 50% of India’s population is 25 years or young which is a great sign in itself. Mobile subscriptions are at a different level and Social Media is doing rounds in each and every Internet consuming party. Soon we will be noticing an India that is going to be the talking point across the world with the immense growth that is being witnessed. Here are some excerpts below:


Internet

  • 50% of the Indian Population is below the age of 25 years and the same comprises the most of Internet users
  • 70% of India's Internet users are male
  • India has grown by 25% more internet users in the last 12 months
  • 20 million people in India use the Internet every single day. Out of this only 2% Indians are from rural areas and 59% access the Internet via their Mobile Devices
  • An average Internet user in India spends 26 minutes online each day
  • There are around 8000 Internet Cafes across India. These comprise of 60% of India's Internet usage
  • 66% of Indian Internet Users check Online Reviews before making the purchase decision
  • E-Commerce in India is estimated to be of USD $10 billion which is around USD $ 100 per Internet User. 67% of the e-commerce comes from Mobile users in India
  • 31% of those living in rural areas of India have never heard of the Internet. This is more than the total population of Brazil

 

 Mobile

  • 40% of Google searches are conducted on Mobile Phones in India
  • Mobile subscription in India is growing at an annual growth rate of 34%
  • 290 million people are mobile phone subscriber from rural areas of India
  • 200 million is the targeted number of new mobile subscribers in India this year
  • 13 billion mobile advertising impressions are sourced every month in India. This is more than 5000 ad impressions every second
  • India's mobile value-added services industry is 2011 is suggested to be at USD 3.6 billion. This is around USD 4.20 per subscriber

 

Social Media

  • Video consumption via Youtube & other social video sites  is accessed by more than 70% users
  • Indians spend an average of 3 hours on Social Media sites every month
  • Facebook is the top social network with 38 million people followed by Orkut (28 million), Twitter (13 million) & LinkedIn (13 million)
  • Facebook in India has grown by 37% in the past 6 months. This is the highest growth seen by any social network in India
  • Social Gaming is the most popular activity in India especially on Facebook & Orkut
  • India has the second highest number of LinkedIn Users (12,838,000) and fourth highest Facebook Users (38,045,000) in the world

 

Phew! These numbers clearly gives us a direction in terms of how India is progressing as a country.
