Exactly six years ago, the little blue bird “Larry” casted a spell on the universe by his first tweet. The micro blogging site which took the net with a storm and created celebrities out of commoners has turned six on Wednesday, 21st March, 2012.

Twitter was started by Jack Dorsey an American Software Architect and Businessman. Dorsey never imagined that after his first tweet “"just setting up my twitter" the world will soak into the Twittermania. The public launch of what was to soon become the world's most popular microblogging platform happened a few months later on July 15, 2006.

Created by 5 member team, Twitter today has become an important marketing tool for celebrities, politicians and businesses, promising a level of intimacy never before approached online, as well as giving the public the ability to speak directly to people and institutions once comfortably on a pedestal.

What started as social media platform, Twitter today has become an instrument for increasing publicity and thereby incorporating heavy corporate revenue. The site is available in 28 languages and employs 835 people. In order to expand its presence in India, Twitter expanded its local trends to five more cities viz; Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Delhi, in addition to its on-going coverage of Mumbai.

The popularity of the 140 character limit micro blogging site can be measured by record breaking tweets (9420 tweets per second,) that were registered during the Superbowl 2012 and  8,868 tweets per second during the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.

Currently with 350 million accounts from people across globe, Twitter took 3 years, 2 months and 1 day to hit the first billion tweets. Now it takes less than a week to clock that many.

According to eMarketer, Twitter’s advertising revenue is to triple by 2014, hitting over $540 million (up from an estimated $260 million this year).Recently, the company has been paying close attention to the different ways it can derive revenues from all those tweeters. Twitter has also recently added more languages and acquired blogging software maker Posterous.

Today, Twitter is used to break important news from any corner of the world. For example, the news about death of Pop star Michael Jackson was flashed on Twitter 45 minutes before the media. Developments and happenings in celebrities, sports players (Yuvraj Singh’s health update) life is first delivered on Twitter and thereby directly to their followers.

No matter the tough competition it gets from its nemesis Facebook and Pininterst, the popularity of tweet caster “Larry” will increase as more and more people choose Twitter to connect with each other.
